Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The illustration shows two possible pathways for the formation of a blue straggler in a globular cluster. Top: Collision: Two low-mass stars in a dense stellar environment collide. This combines their masses and forms a single hot star. Bottom: Mass transfer: In a dense binary star system, the light but dense star can draw matter from the heavier but more extended companion ("vampire"), thereby depleting it of hydrogen fuel in exchange for its own rejuvenation. The zig-zag curves in the illustrations have no physical background.
